Thousands of mourners from all religions thronged the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Mombasa, to bid farewell to the late Catholic Archbishop Boniface Lele.
The burial ceremony brought businesses in the Coastal town to a standstill as all roads leading to the Cathedral were blocked with thousands of people both Christians, Muslims, Hindus and none believers attending the ceremony.
The late archbishop, who was described as ‘selfless’ by all, was buried in a tomb like Jesus Christ.
The tomb was curved out of the coral rock within the Cathedral’s compound which is one of the oldest churches in East Africa.
And just like Jesus, Lele died a poor man and with nothing despite having served the Catholic Church for 40 good years as a priest and Archbishop, because all his money was donated to charity and to help the less privileged in the society.
During the burial, politicians among them former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula and Prof. Peter Anyang Nyong’o, were denied a chance to make political speeches.
Only Lands Cabinet Secretary, Charity Ngilu, was given a chance to read President Uhuru Kenyatta’s speech.
Also present in the ceremony was Pope Francis’ representative in Kenya, Charles Daniel Balvo.
