Five persons, including a pregnant woman were electrocuted on Thursday in Lagos after a PHCN high-tension cable fell, causing fire and explosion.

An eyewitness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the incident happened around 2.00 a.m. at Oworonshoki, Lagos. The source said that fire broke out when the cable fell on a Toyota Camry car loaded with petroleum products. The victims rushed out of their homes when they heard the explosion and ran into the live cable unknowingly.

“As they rushed out, they all embraced the cable in front of their house and they were electrocuted. The corpses were taken to Yaba General Hospital by policemen from Oworonshoki and some residents of the area.“

Ex-president General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Amb. Ralph Uwechue dies

Ambassador Ralph Uwechue, one-time president of Ohaneze- Ndigbo, a pan-Igbo sociocultural body, has died. Chief Wechue died yesterday afternoon March 13th at an Abuja hospital.

Elected in November 2008 to head Ohaneze, Chief Uwechue was a envoy leader during the Obasanjo administration where he supervised conflict resolutions in Africa  and was also appointed to lead the ECOWAS Peace mission in Cote d’Ivoire.

An illustrious son of Ogwashi Ukwu Delta state, Chief Uwechue was aged 79. May his soul rest in peace...amen.

Chimanda Adichie wins US National Book Critics Circle Award

Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie yesterday March 13th won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction for her third novel about race and identity, Americanah.

The prize, which is chosen by 600 book critics and editors from majorpublications, is among the most prestigious literary recognitions in the world.

The award was presented to her yesterday at a function in Manhattan, USA. Congrats to her. Meanwhile the book was also shortlisted for the Bailey's Women Fiction Prize.

Halle Berry headed for divorce...again?

Actress Halle Berry famously swore on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2004 that she'd never marry again after her second marriage ended but she went back on her word and got married again...to French actor Olivier Martinez.

Now according to new reports, her marriage to Olivier is on the rocks. The couple have not been photographed together since Dec 7th and Olivier did not accompany Halle to the Academy Awards.

The mother of two has also stopped wearing her wedding band and the couple are rumored to be living apart. Halle and Olivier have one child together and she has one child with former partner Gabriel Aubry.

Halle Berry was married to Atlanta Braves outfielder David Justice from 1993 to 1997 and to R&B singer Eric Benet from 2001 to 2005.

Fortunately, Nigerian soldiers were able to foil their attempt which has been described as attempt by pockets of terrorists to free detained Boko Haram members.

Gunmen kill 69 people in Katsina State

69 people including men, women and children were killed in separate attacks and several houses razed in 3 villages in Katsina State this week. Fulani Herdsmen have been accused of being behind the recent attack.

Confirming the attack to AFP, a lawmaker in the state, Honorable Abbas Abdullahi Michika said the men attacked three villages; Mararrabar Maigor, Kura Mota and Maigura Villages, where 47, 7 and 8 bodies were recovered from each village respectively

"So far, 69 bodies have been recovered from the attacks carried out by a large group of gunmen riding on motorcycles".

Fulani Herdsmen have been in a running battle with local farmers over the loss of grazing land which is important for their cattle.

'NDLEA drug accusation messed up my acting career' - Baba Suwe

In a recent interview with Encomium mag, popular Yoruba comic actor Baba Suwe said that he has not received any money from NDLEA as damages and that the 'false accusation' has damaged his acting career and most of his friends don't want to associate with him anymore...

"I have not collected any money. The most painful thing is that I was wrongfully accused. Had it been I actually committed the crime, I wouldn't mind but they punished me for nothing. I was in NDLEA for almost three weeks and nothing was found on me. No matter the kind of juju one may have used, I don't think there is anybody that can even conceal cocaine for even two days. It would burst inside the person's stomach which may lead to death. And I believe after all their investigations, they should have released me so that I can continue with my career. But the whole situation, the way I was treated actually rubbished my image. My career has been dwindling. A lot of people who are supposed to be inviting me to take part in their movies abandoned me because of that incident. A lot of people that could have assisted me financially dont want to associate with me again. For instance I was close to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu before and he was very nice to me. He had done a lot for me but now its very difficult for me to be close to him again. He is also even not comfortable with me around him again because of the allegation" Baba Suwe said

Angelina Jolie to undergo more preventive cancer surgeries

Actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie has revealed she's in the process of going under the knife again as a preventive measure against the spread of cancer.  

The mother of six who had both breasts removed last year after tests showed she carried a gene which increased her chances of contracting bothbreast and ovarian cancer, told Entertainment Weekly the new operation is to prevent ovarian cancer 

"Wherever I go, usually I run into women and we talk about health issues, women issues, breast cancer, ovarian cancer. It makes me to feel closer to other people who deal with the same things and have either lost their parents or are considering surgeries or wandering about their children. There is still another surgery to have which I haven't yet. I would get advice from all these people whom I have been talking to, to get through that next stage. " She said

Bauchi State Governor Isa Yuguda was a guest on BBC Africa radio show yesterday where he talked about the anti-gay law. He supported the bill and declared that he's not gay so none of his sons can be gay. 

When asked what he would do if any of his sons confessed to being gay, Governor Yuguda exclaimed 'God Forbid!' then said "What will I do? Well, I may have to resign to my fate that I have a son who is a gay but I'm assuring you I'm not gay so my son will never be a gay. Gay blood doesn't flow in our family. Jamaican Rapper Vybz Kartel Found Guilty of Murder

After a trial that has lasted over 65 days, embattled dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel has been found guilty of murder.

Kartel, 38, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, had been in custody since September 2011 and went on trial on November 20. He was charged with the murder of 27-year-old Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. Prosecutors had alleged Clive Williams was beaten to death at Kartel's home in August 2011 after being lured there to answer 
for two missing illegal guns. His body has never been found.
Police testified they retrieved a text message from Kartel's phone saying Williams was chopped up in a "mincemeat" so fine that his remains would never be found.

 The 11-member jury handed down its verdict less than two hours after deliberations began. Also found guilty were Kartel’s associates, Shawn Campbell (a.k.a. Shawn Storm), Kahira Jones and Andre St. John; a fourth associate, Shane Williams, received the sole non-guilty verdict.

However, the lead attorneys representing Kartel have steadfastly maintained that the case is a conspiracy by the police to frame Kartel because the prosecution has failed to present any evidence linking the accused to the murder of Williams.

The 65-day trial is the longest running criminal hearing in the history of Jamaica’s circuit court system. The sentencing date is scheduled for March 27. Kartel’s lawyers have indicated they will appeal the verdict.

'My Kidnappers Fed Me Garri and Oil' – Rescued President Jonathan’s Uncle

Happy to be alive and finally home, President Goodluck Jonathan's rescued uncle and adopted father has narrated his ordeal in the hands of his captors.

Nitabai, a former university lecturer, said his abductors fed him with garri and oil for the 18 days he was held captive. He was blindfolded throughout the period. He also said  he was almost submerged in a swamp while the kidnappers were moving him from one spot to another because he was blindfolded.

The already emaciated man, said:

 “My ordeal in the hands of my captors was simply horrendous. I was blindfolded  for those 18 
days. So I did not see my abductors. They fed me with garri and oil. There was a day they were asking me some foolish questions and I kept quiet. They were upset and beat me up. It was a miracle I did not die that day.”

Punch reports Inengite said he had yet to know the motive behind his abduction. When reminded that it could be because of his relation with President Jonathan, he answered that he could not rule it out.


The septuagenarian, who had lectured at Rivers State University beforing moving to the Niger Delta University, where he retired, was abducted by 10 gunmen about 9pm on February 23, 2014. You recall that Nitabai’s abductors had demanded for a N500 million ransom but were said to be infuriated when his family members said they could only afford N30m. The kidnappers rejected the N30m, allegedly saying the amount was “unpresidential.”

Eventually, according to Bayelsa police spokesman, Mr Alex Akhigbe, no ransom was paid for Nitabai’s release. The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Hillary Opara, said Nitabai was rescued in the early hours of Thursday.

Reps Uncover Fresh Missing N35bn!

For your information guys, more revelations by the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts indicated on Thursday that the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation (OHSF) could not account for N35bn it collected from the Service Wide Vote within nine years.

While the records of the Budget Office of the Federation showed that the OHSF received N52bn between 2004 and 2012, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Remi Adelakun, admitted only N17.6bn.

The committee, which is chaired by Mr. Solomon Olamilekan, insisted on Thursday that Adelakun must 
explain how the N35bn was spent.

At Thursday’s session, the permanent secretary and officials of the budget office had disagreed over how much the latter released to the OHSF. The records of the budget office showed that in 2004, the OHSF received N2.7bn;

• N9.8m in 2005; 
• N701.7m in 2006; 
• N896.3m in 2007; 
• N5.3bn in 2008 and another N612.9m; 
• N70m in 2009.
• For 2010, the figure was N17.6bn; 
• in 2011, it was N13.6bn 
• and N8.5bn in 2012.

However, the OHSF admitted the N17.6bn released in 2010. Olamilekan ruled that the permanent secretary must produce documents on how the balance of over N35bn was utilised within two weeks.

'The DPP has Written that I'm Innocent' - Pastor Sign Fireman

Controversial Lagos pastor, Dr. Sign Fireman, real name Ofuche Ukoha, in a new interview has once again stated his innocence after an 18-year-old suspect, Ikechukwu Egbo, arrested for raping and killing a 12-year-old girl, Bose Ogoja, in Badagry implicated Fireman in the murder. Fireman was arrested but later released on bail 4 days later. 
Fireman told reporters:

A lot of things written about me then were not correct. I want to use this opportunity to clear the air. I didn’t do it. I have never met that young man before. The story said I was bundled to the police station. That is not true. I drove to Panti police station myself. If I was guilty, I would have run away. When the young man was called to testify in the presence of policemen, he confessed that we had never met. The boy who claimed he washes my car every day, did not even recognize the colour of my house when I took the police to my house in Lekki. How come? Thank God his mother came out to vindicate me.
A lot of things have happened to me in recent times. I have suffered bandits attack, assassination attempt, even my mother’s house in Abuja was burnt down but I am not perturbed because I know who I believe in. This whole thing started when I came in contact with a document which I will make known soon. The people involved have tried to prevent me from making it public but they are wasting their time.”

Brandishing copies from the police and the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), he continued:

“From the investigation of the police, there is nothing to show that I had anything to do with the allegation. The DPP had also written that I am innocent. You can go and verify yourself. I am against killing. I have been in the miracle ministry since I was 18 and my spiritual father is Dr. T.L. Osborn. This boy has several cases of rape in Badagry according to investigations, even the mother came out to testify to that effect.”
